Posted: Feb 7, 2025, 11:38 AM

This February, Mansfield Library is proudly showcasing a special collection in honor of Black History Month, celebrating the rich history and cultural contributions of African Americans. Curated by local art collector David L. Walker, the exhibit offers a unique opportunity to explore the powerful stories and legacies that have shaped African American history.

David L. Walker, a passionate art collector from the Frierson, LA community, has long been interested in genealogy and family history, inspired by the stories passed down from his older relatives. David's collecting journey began as a child with coins and currency, but over the years, his collection grew to include comic books, toys, cars, stamps, and antiques. His first public exhibition took place in the fall of 2019 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Kington, LA. Encouraged by family members and parishioners, David was inspired to share his collection with the public.

David believes each item he collects holds historical significance beyond its monetary value. The more unique and intriguing the object, the greater the interest it sparks. This Black History Month, his exhibit at Mansfield Library offers a glimpse into the important narratives that continue to shape our understanding of African American history.

In addition to David’s collection, Mansfield Library is hosting several other inspiring exhibits to honor Black History Month, highlighting the profound impact of African American culture and contributions to our world. These displays offer a rich, multifaceted celebration that encourages reflection, learning, and appreciation.

Each DeSoto Parish Library location is also featuring a unique display to celebrate Black History Month. Be sure to visit all the libraries this February to experience the diverse exhibits that honor African American culture and history.
